Cauliflower Steak

I heard of Cauliflower Steak many times, but I was yet to make it. Then, I tried it once, and I loved it. First of all, the dish is very easy to make, as is baked. I like that a lot. It means I can do other things while the cauliflower is cooking. With the remaining cauliflower I made a Cauliflower and Pepper Soup. That was delicious too.

I’ve made baked cauliflower before, as one of the veggies in a tray bake. But I think this version is better, as the taste of the cauliflower is not overpowered by other vegetables with a more intense flavour.

As each cauliflower has 160g, this means it counts as 2 form your 5 a day. How amazing is that. If you pair it with sweet potato mash it will add up the veggies. This is what I plan to do next time.

Ingredients for 2 servings of cauliflower steak:

– 320g cauliflower, cut in two
– 3 spoons of vegetable oil
– 1/2 tsp turmeric
– 1 tsp dried basil
– 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
– cayenne pepper
– 1 tsp of lemon juice

Start by making a rub with two spoons of oil and all the spices. Pour a spoon of oil in the baking tray you want to use. Wash and cut two thick slices of cauliflower for the steak. Pat dry the cauliflower steak.

Preheat the oven at 200C or 180C fan. Meanwhile, brush the spiced oil on both sides of the cauliflower. Put it on the baking tray. Sprinkle lemon juice on top.

Now that the oven is ready, put the tray in the oven. Bake the cauliflower for 20 minutes. Take the tray out, flip the cauliflower and put it back in the oven. Let it bake for another 10 to 15 minutes.

The cauliflower is now ready to be served.

As I mentioned, I served it with mash potatoes. I made a mustard mash with wholegrain mustard. You can also serve it with chips. Because the cauliflower is lovely and tender, not dry, I don’t think it needs a sauce.

Have you ever tried a cauliflower steak?
